Gartner Report – Hype Cycle for Infrastructure Strategies, 2017

Digital transformation is forcing Information and Operations (I&O) leaders to rethink colocation configurations. Enterprises are demanding internal infrastructure capable of acting in concert with external resources to create a holistic IT solution. This Hype Cycle includes 22 separate and distinct infrastructure tools, techniques and technologies that enable I&O leaders to improve efficiencies in their data centre infrastructure. Making infrastructure systems more efficient can free up funds that can then be reinvested into digital business initiatives.

Highlights

Four technologies stand out as transformative:

  • Data centre infrastructure management (DCIM), which enables a holistic approach to aligning data centre IT and facility systems
  • Edge computing, which impacts network traffic related to the cloud and the Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Micro data centres, which is expected to play a crucial role in the coming IoT era and may redefine the form factor and location of what a data centre is
  • Data centre interconnect fabric (DCIF), which is poised to deliver the data centre as software-defined, dynamic and distributed, enabling business to deliver existing application models faster

Enterprises implementing multicloud applications/storage should request DCIF or equivalent functionality from their data centre provider, and insist the provider compare its approach to competitive offerings. Planners should ask about the underlying switching technology, API accessibility, and which cloud, container, orchestration, and management options the providers are working with. Where possible, avoid tightly-controlled ecosystems in favour of open systems.
